I loved the appreciable bend in the rod on the backcast—it was the ideal reminder that the rod was loaded and ready to go. Maybe it’s that “heritage” taper, but the Butter Stick suffers from some significant line slap—even after digging fairly deep to recover my fiberglass cast after a day or two of casting a graphite big-water rod, I still struggled to get the line moving forward without the “tick, tick, tick” of fly line bouncing off the rod blank. Echo River Glass Fly Rod. My local shop doesn't carry Redington or Echo unfortunately. I have a 5 wt graphite already and would like to get a smaller weight. 3 wt reels are nothing but a place to keep your line so buying an $800 Abel is totally ridiculous IMHO.
Was the Echo given you the old big water glass or small water glass, or the newer river glass? But I wanted to see what the rod could do. I went with an echo glass 3 wt set up through reds fly shop. Great review and fabulous price on that Butter Stick! So far rod has done well, have gotten some decent fish on it.

The BUTTER STICK does just that. Its a minor issue to me, this is the inly rod I have that even has alignment dots. The T-Glass construction gives the blank of the Butter Stick superb short-range accuracy and a dynamic full flex rod profile. It will allow for a softer casting stroke, which will allow for more control at shorter distances and slower speeds, which will allow for softer presentations but still doesn't really factor into accuracy and even with the slightest wind could seriously be a detriment to accuracy. I have the 3 and 4 wt small water glass but haven’t had a chance to do much with them yet. If you’re too fast with your cast, you’ll pile line around your feet in no time. That way you can see if fiberglass fits your style without spending a ton on the rod, and the rest of the gear can transfer to a nicer rod if you decide to stick with glass.
Rod, reddington zero reel, rio line trout LTE for $300. I've found reddington butterstick, orvis superfine glass, and echos glass rods all to be put onto a pedestal. That said, if you want to build a trout arsenal, get the 3wt.

It was palpable. Accuracy is bolstered by rods with less side to side motion (more unidirectional material) and quicker recovery.

Thanks for the tip. Images: Chad Shmukler and Earl Harper. There are other much more expensive glass rods on the market today, and I cast a few of them at this year’s IFTD show in Orlando. I would say as a general rule echo makes better products than redington, so anything that is priced similarly I would give the edge to echo. This angler, a flats freak and a bass guy with the occasional dip into the seedy, swampy world where fish like bowfin lurk in black water, had his self-proclaimed “best day of trout fishing” using the 7-foot, 3-weight version of the Butter Stick.
